Thank You and a Look Back

As we move into fall season, we wanted to thank VUL members for your support this year.

Thank You

Thank you to everyone for your patience in April & May when we were scrambling to figure out what to do! This year has been unlike anything we have experienced before.

When we cancelled Winter & Summer leagues, thank you to those who were able to donate your refunds back to the VUL.

Thank you to captains who helped us to design modified programs, and to players who sent us emails of support.

Thank you to all Fall participants for following our new guidelines to keep each other and our communities safe!  For those who aren’t playing yet, thank you for taking care of yourselves. We will be here when you are ready to play again.

And thank you to our Spirit Award nominees for your contributions this year.

Our Focus

When the pandemic started, we set our focus on ensuring the VUL and our community would remain healthy and strong. We wanted to maintain good relationships with our members, support all of our personnel, make prudent financial choices, and be ready when ultimate was allowed to resume.

Since then we’ve done our best to keep VUL members up to date through regular website articles, email newsletters, and social media posts.

We reduced our monthly expenses wherever possible. This included reducing hours for all employees and seasonal personnel, and pausing the hiring of a new Marketing Manager. Our staff levels are currently about 50% of normal. A huge thank you to the amazing VUL team for everything you’ve done over the past 7 months!

We applied for and received federal financial support, including a Canada Emergency Business Loan ($40,000) and the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidies (ongoing).

We spent a great deal of time preparing Return to Play plans in order to run fun and safe programs. We were pleased to offer some activities this summer and a full set of leagues this fall!

Throughout all of this, our volunteer Board of Directors has been very active, meeting twice as often as normal to stay on top of all the changes and provide guidance & oversight. Please join me in thanking them!

What’s Next

If our Fall season continues to go well, and if the virus stays manageable in Vancouver, we expect to run modified programs in the Winter. Let’s continue to play safe!

We still have financial challenges to overcome, as the impact of COVID-19 on the VUL has been significant. In the next few weeks we’ll share more about our plans to address them.

For now, we wanted to provide a brief update and say thank you for being part of the VUL community!
