CUC 2013 in Vancovuer?

The next 2 Canadian National Championships will be held in "Western Canada" as per Ultimate Canada's East-East, West-West rotation. 2012 will happen in Victoria.

In January 2012 UC will release the Bid Book for CUC 2013. The last time Nationals was in Vancovuer was 2004, and if the 2013 event is not held here then the next chance won't be until 2016.

So making a bid for CUC 2013 seems like it might be a good idea.

A successful tournament needs a lot of things, but the first and most important thing that it needs is a strong and committed Leadership Group to push the event forward.

My question - do we have people in Vancouver who are interested in getting involved on the ground floor and who would be interested in being part of that leadership group?

If you are interested, or know of someone who might be, email me or post here.

And while you are at it, do we think that Nationals in Vancouver is a good idea in the first place?

That would be very cool.

And CUC2013 will decide bids to WUCC2014, so it would be favourable to our hometown teams if we made it easy for them to qualify by holding the event locally.

I agree, that would be very cool.

I would gladly be willing to help out in any way I can.

Any word on this? What do we need to do to get it going?

The very first step is to find a champion for the cause, and to assemble a team of people willing to prepare the bid. The bid forms & guidelines will look very much like this:

It is not all that hard to fill out the form. There are examples on the UC website available for different sections. The documents from Vancouver's 2004 bid probably still exist, and the people who submitted it can be consulted. The single most intimidating part is not the filing of the bid, but gathering of people who are willing to become the organizing committee. The single most important ingredient is enthusiasm.

I'd suggest starting with a Facebook campaign, for example. Make some posts to the VUL Facebook group to find interested persons. Get people answering polls about their interest level -- would they be keen on being organizers/project managers? Volunteer coordinators? Volunteers? Some of this information will be necessary to the bid itself.

Unfortunately, I have nowhere near the time to take on such a task outside of consultation, and existing VUL staff is busy juggling everything else. But if the enthusiasm is demonstrated independently, the VUL can give its blessing.

OK, it's my fault that I started this and then have not followed up. I'm still taking names of people who are interested in getting involved.

The bid is the easy part, the doing is a bit more of a task.

I have just learned from UC that the bid documents for CUC 2013 have been delayed a bit as they are looking at some changes to the event that may start in 2013.

In any case, if you are interested in getting involved you can send me an email. And "Touring" has it right, the first step is to find that champion. It could be you. It won't be me...it's the next generations time to shine.
