Vortex Summer - Touring & Regional


Overview:

Vortex offers an elite team-based coaching and training program for High School Ultimate players for the summer season.

Teams are formed after tryouts at the start of the season. Teams are classified as Touring and Regional teams and compete in Open and Women divisions at the British Columbia Ultimate Championship (BCUC - Regionals). Touring teams aim to qualify for the Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC - Nationals) at BCUC.

All teams participate in other local tournaments throughout the summer season as determined by the Vortex coordinators and coaches.
 


Tryout Information:

Touring and Regional teams will be formed after tryouts at the start of the summer season. All players must register online before they are permitted to participate in the tryout.

2025 Touring Teams (CUC Qualifiers): Vortex, Vertigo (MM), Vintage
2025 Regional Teams (Regional play only): Venus (FM), Voltage, Vanguard, Velocity

Tryout Schedule -

Tryout #1:

  • Date - Tuesday, May 27th
  • Tryout stream - Touring Only (Male and Female matching players)
  • Location -
    • Male matching (Touring only) - Queen Elizabeth Secondary (9457 King George Blvd, Surrey)
    • Female matching (Touring only) - Queen Elizabeth Secondary (9457 King George Blvd, Surrey)
  • Time -
    • Check in starts at 5pm
    • Tryout starts at 6pm and finishes at 8.30pm
  • What to bring - Bring a light and dark jersey, have lots of water with you and be ready to go.

Tryout #2:

  • Date - Thursday, May 29th
  • Tryout stream - Touring and Regional  (Male and Female matching players)
  • Location -
    • Male matching (Touring + Regional) - Queen Elizabeth Secondary (9457 King George Blvd, Surrey)
    • Female matching (Touring + Regional) - Fraser Heights Secondary (10588 160 Street, Surrey)
  • Time -
    • Check in starts at 5pm
    • Tryout starts at 6pm and finishes at 8.30pm
  • What to bring - Bring a light and dark jersey, have lots of water with you and be ready to go.

  • Date - Saturday, May 31st
  • Tryout stream - Regional only  (Male and Female matching players)
  • Location -
    • Male matching (Regional only) - Queen Elizabeth Secondary (9457 King George Blvd, Surrey)
    • Female matching (Regional only) - Queen Elizabeth Secondary (9457 King George Blvd, Surrey)
  • Time -
    • Check in starts at 8am
    • Tryout starts at 9am and finishes at 12pm
  • What to bring - Bring a light and dark jersey, have lots of water with you and be ready to go.

Offers timeline -

  • Offers for TOURING players will happen on Friday, May 30th in the morning.
  • Offers for REGIONAL teams will happen following the Regional tryouts, likely in the evening.

When a player or parent registers for tryouts, this registration applies to all sets of tryouts - players do not need to register more than once.

2025 Tryout Fee:

The tryout fee is $20.00 and covers field costs and expenses associated with the extended tryout process. Registration opens on Wednesday, May 7th.

How to Register:

Complete these steps to register:

  1. Registration will be open on a first-come, first-serve basis once registration opens.
  2. Registration is completed online.  We accept payment by credit card, Visa Debit, or e-transfer.
  3. If a player U19 registers themselves, they must also get Parental Consent. Emails are sent to the player and parent/guardian with instructions.
  4. Read the before your register page and then register online once registration opens.

Touring Teams:

Touring teams are formed with the intent of qualifying for, and competing in, the Canadian Ultimate Championships (Nationals)

  • Designed for experienced high school aged players looking to develop their skills in a highly competitive environment, with the end goal being to play at Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC)
  • All three teams will play in the Open and Women's Divisions for a total of six touring teams.
  • Each team will have three dedicated coaches, who will guide you through tryouts, practices, games and tournaments.
  • Financial assistance is available for families looking for some help. 

Program information:

  • Format: Team based training (Open and Women division)
  • Duration: June to August (3 times per week)
  • Timeslot:
    • Participants will receive exact information about their training schedule after teams are formed
  • Schedule: 2-3 hrs per session (Time varies based on the team)
  • Location: Practices will largely take place on Surrey based fields in the North Surrey/Guildford/Whalley areas.

  • Age: 11yrs or 12yrs at the youngest and 18yrs at the oldest (age as of Dec 31st, 2025)
  • Inclusivity: All players are welcome, including LGBTQ2+ and transgender
  • Equipment required: Water bottle, Cleats or runners can be used on synthetic turf fields, but we recommend cleats. Everyone must bring a dark AND light t-shirt.

Fees for Touring:

Base player fees are payable online by credit card upon offer of a playing position.

  • Base Player Fees - $675.00
  • Estimated CUC Player Fees: $575.00 (due upon qualification for CUC)

Fees include:

  • Top level coaching - Each team will have three dedicated coaches, who will guide you through tryouts, practices, games and tournaments.
  • All tournament fees including Misfit Cup, Regionals and Vortex Cup*
  • Two personalized sublimated jerseys and one pair of shorts
  • Fields, equipment, membership, insurance and administration fee

*If Touring teams dont qualify for CUCs

Estimated CUC Travel Fees include:

  • Coaching
  • CUC Player Fees per player
  • Accommodation at Holiday Inn
  • RMT support
  • Chaperoning and logistical support

Players are responsible for their own transportation to/from Edmonton. Flight information will be provided in July after CUC qualification.
