VUL Partner Spotlight: Stephen Mogatas

At the VUL, we feel lucky we get to connect with the skilled and creative people behind our community partners. We want you to get to know them, too! This is the third in our monthly Partner Spotlight series.

Meet Stephen Mogatas of Jointworks Chiropractic

Name and job title:

Dr. Stephen Mogatas, Chiropractor and Director at Jointworks Chiropractic

What are your main teams or past teams?

DC, Battlecats & Friends, Grumpy Dog, Muriqui, Furious George, Rock Fight

In your opinion, what makes ultimate special?

Shaft was my first team and Jed was our captain. I was immediately hooked even though I played my first game in trail runners and a cotton t-shirt. I didn't know how to throw, barely knew how to catch, and I was gassed after two minutes on the field. I don't remember the score or who won that night, but nobody ever remembers the score, of any game, ever, and that's what makes ultimate special.

Do you have a favourite ultimate memory you want to share?

It was a dream come true to play on Furious George at the 2014 World Ultimate Club Championships in Lecco, Italy. I was so proud to represent the team and grateful for the chance to join my friends on the field. I even have the game winning disc that I caught, hanging on the wall at Jointworks.

What's your favourite throw and why?

The risk and reward of a no-look pass!

What is your favourite stretch all players should know?

My favourite stretch is the one I didn't know that I needed! Everyone is different and all players should know what works best for their bodies. There are a lot of qualified people that know about body maintenance, and I promise that they want to help you.

What have been your favourite books to read or activities to do during this time of social distancing?

Snuggling with my kids and ordering too much take-out from our favourite local restaurants.

What do you love most about your job?

I love working with friends and caring for people everyday.  I am also grateful to have been the chiropractor for Team Canada Ultimate at seven world championships, including the World Games in 2013 and 2017. I have shared incredible moments with the athletes, whom I consider dear friends, and I hope to attend the next World Games when they resume.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

The VUL has been a special part of my life for over 20 years. Some of my closest friends and best memories are from ultimate, and I look forward to playing with everyone again.
